Learning Objectives:

gain National Advantage.
Conceptual Background:
In 1990 Michael E. Porter of Harvard business School presented the theory
about the determinants of national Competitive Advantage, this theory is
also named as “Diamond Model”. Porter theorizes that four broad
attributes of a nation shape the environment in which local firms compete.
These attributes are Factor Endowments (human resource, infrastructure
and R&D), Demand Conditions (nature of home demand for the industry’s
product or service), Relating and Supporting Industries (related raw
materials and other supportive businesses), Firms Strategy, structure and
rivalry. These four attributes are affected either by the Government
(economic policies and business regulations) or by the Chance (business

opportunity at international level). Theory says that these attributes are
correlated to each other and their contribution is equal in order to sustain
the competitive advantage at international level.
Real Time Case:

sized units, sports goods industry employees 60,000 workers. The footballs
produced in this city are of unmatched quality. Pakistani handmade
footballs have the competitive advantage in terms of design and quality.
Famous German brand Adidas, the official sports kits and accessories
provider of London 2012 Olympics, has chosen Pakistan’s handmade soccer
ball “ The Albert” for London Olympics. The Adidas Albert is the official
game ball for London 2012 Olympics, coming hand stitched straight from
Sialkot which exports about 30 million balls a year, an estimated 40% of
global production.

manufacturing facilities in Sialkot, Pakistan for producing footballs for
international and national market. Before making the final decision the
group wants to thoroughly analyze the situation. In this situation Porter’s
Diamond Model can be of immense help for analyzing the situation. You
have been selected as analyst for the group. As an analyst you are required
